Podcast: From the Ashes; the beginning of Environment Recovery Project

When Casey Kirchhoff's home was destroyed in Australia's Black Summer bushfires, she chose to distract herself and focus on recovery. And so the Environment Recovery Project was born.

Australia’s Black Summer bushfire season resulted in millions of hectares across Australia burned, with an estimated three billion animals killed or displaced, not including invertebrates.

The impact of the fires on biodiversity was too vast for professional scientists alone to collect data - and community (citizen) scientists answered the call. The Environment Recovery Project on iNaturalist has helped paint a more complete picture of which species are bouncing back, and which are not. And the need for records in ongoing.
